Guidance released for social housing professionals

20 May 2011 - Deborah Bates

Specialist guidance has been released by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) regarding equalities within social housing, EDF.org.uk reported.

This should provide practical advice for those in social housing jobs regarding the correlation between social housing and human rights, the commission confirmed.

Reports revealed that the guidance covered aspects such as "allocation of housing, the terms of tenancy agreements, repairs and maintenance, and anti-social behaviour." It was created in partnership between an Advisory Group and the EHRC.

The advice, entitled 'Human rights at home: Guidance for social housing providers', details how adhering to the Human Rights Act could provide many benefits for local authority housing providers. It claims that following the act makes good "business sense" and will lead to a decline in complaints from tenants.

The chief executive of EHRC, Helen Hughes, spoke to 24Dash about the recently released guidance. She also confirmed her organisations role in the UK, stating: "Our role as a regulator is to help social housing providers understand what they need to do to meet their human rights obligations."

"Human rights are about treating people with dignity and respect. Human rights are particularly important in relation to social housing, as people living in adequate housing are more likely to have severe ill health, a disability or poor mental health."
