Government support social landlords evicting rioters

12 August 2011 - Joe Elvin

Those in social housing jobs will be allowed to evict any tenants found to be involved in the riots around the UK.

A number of social landlords have stated they intend to boot out any rioters living in local council houses and have today been given the full support of Prime Minister David Cameron.

In a speech to the House of Commons, Cameron urged more local councils to follow the lead of social housing authorities in Westminster, Greenwich, Salford, Nottingham, Hammersmith and Fulham.

According to 24dash.com, he said: "Local authorities and landlords already have tough powers to evict the perpetrators from social housing. Some local authorities are already doing this. I want to see others follow their lead and we will consider whether these powers need to be strengthened further.

"I think there may be opportunities, possibly through the new criminal justice and sentencing legislation, to make sure we are better at confiscating things from people when they commit crimes."

Currently, those in public sector housing jobs only have the powers to evict those who have committed crimes in their constituency.

However, BBC News report that the Government will meet immediately to consult on the possibility of expanding these rules to punish crime in other areas of the country.
