Future of NHS "guaranteed" by David Cameron

07 June 2011 - Deborah Bates

The future of the NHS and its "universal coverage" is set to be "guaranteed" by the prime minister in an upcoming speech.

BBC News confirmed that David Cameron will relay five key commitments to the English people in his speech, although these promises won't cover the NHS in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, for now.

Reports have suggested that Cameron drew his five pledges from "what matters most to the public", such as reducing spending throughout the NHS and ensure waiting times don't get out of control. Furthermore, he will address areas such as the potential abolishment of PCTs in his speech, and plans to increase the commissioning powers of GPs.

Hopefully these five guarantees will please those in social care jobs and other NHS-related roles across the country, as they should be able to better care for their patients.

In what the Daily Mail has called the prime minister's "starkest warning yet", he will reportedly suggest that in order to keep "free healthcare" alive and well in England, the government must make changes. Currently, Cameron will say, this "precious principle" is at risk.

The prime minister, who is supported by his deputy, Nick Clegg, will allegedly conclude his important address by stating: "A whole range of people are changing their view. Before...many people were claiming the NHS is fine."

"Now, whatever their views about how to do it, most agree change is needed. What's more, a significant number are now more clearly on board with the thrust of what we are proposing."
