Anne Milton, a former nurse in the NHS, has become the latest appointment in the Department of Health to be announced.

A former district and hospital nurse, Ms Milton has also been a Royal College of Nursing steward, before entering her last post as shadow health minister in 2007.

New Prime Minister David Cameron has given Ms Milton the prestigious role of parliamentary under-secretary of state for health in the newly re-branded Department of Health, after she won her Guildford constituency seat in last week's election with a majority of 14 per cent.  

Ms Milton has previously pledged to improve working conditions for healthcare professionals including those in nurse manager jobs and qualified social worker positions. As a supporter of professional development, Nursing Times reports that Ms Milton is passionate about ensuring that all registered nurses undertake a degree course.

Other Department of Health positions are being announced in the media, with Paul Burstow and Simon Burns to serve as ministers of state for health in the Lib Con coalition Government.

Secretary of state for health has been awarded to the Conservative MP for South Cambridgeshire Andrew Lansley, with more roles being announced next week, much to the anticipation of the national media.
