Dietitians to consider psychology in food consumption

15 July 2010 - Hannah McLaverty-Williamson

Those in dietitian jobs are being advised to consider the mental and psychological aspects of food consumption, when advising patients on their eating habits.

Psychologist David Moxon, told the Mediplacements website: "Food is heavily influenced by psychological factors in lots of different ways; you can't tackle eating behaviour without looking at some of these deeper psychological issues."

A recent study conducted by weight loss management programme Lighter Life, revealed that more than a quarter of a Briton's weekly shop is spent buying snack items, contributing to the countries growing obesity problems.

Consumers are spending nearly £1,000 a year on each family member, forking out on treats such as chocolates, biscuits, crisps, fizzy drinks and alcohol, a figure which equates to £17 per week.

Mr Moxon argued that whilst diets can be effective, the 'real change' is only likely to happen and be sustained, if people alter the way in which they manage food consumption in their everyday lives.

He suggested that with the help of a dietitian, consumers should try to understand the role junk food plays in their life, as doing so would make it easier for them to overcome their dependence on it.

"People need to sit down and think about their eating habits and patterns and then question the underlying reasons for them; if they are not hungry then perhaps they could fill that transition with some other thoughts of behaviour."

Obesity is an increasing problem in the UK, particularly among young people. A recent survey revealed that one in three children aged between five and 12, are either overweight or obese.
