Dietitians and Nutritionist jobs grow in NHS

19 November 2009

The NHS are recruiting a higher number of dietitians due to the amount of obesity cases growing in the UK. We all know obesity is becoming an increased problem, this is down to people just not knowing what to eat, instead gorging on fatty foods until they are full. Thus causing many health problems, which the NHS spend thousands on trying to cure.

If the NHS employ more dieticians, the problem could be avoided before it starts. They translate the science of nutrition into everyday information about food, offering practical nutrition advice to individuals or groups.

Dietitians are also needed to work with those who have special dietary requirements and to help identify where they are going wrong. It is an important job as they have to evaluate and improve treatments, also educate their clients which can be doctors, nurses, health professionals and community groups.

NHS Dietitians are increasingly needed to work in hospitals and in the community as health educators and managers. Community and hospital Dietitians are there to educate people who need special diets as part of any medical treatment which they are undergoing, such as: kidney disease, food allergies, eating disorders, diabetics, HIV/AIDS, oncology and gastroenterology.

As well as a growing need for Dietitians, Nutritionists also have an increasing role to play in healthcare and there are opportunities to work in the NHS. Nutritionists are different to Dietitians in that they study the nutrients in food, and how the nutrients are used by the body. Most of the major food manufacturers and retailers employ nutritionists and food scientists but opportunities also arise in research, education and journalism. There are a variety of careers within the field of food science and technology which can be greatly useful for the NHS.
