Consumers must learn to read food labels

02 June 2011 - Deborah Bates

Consumers need to learn how to read their food labels correctly, in order to stay fit and healthy.

That's according to one of the many experts working in dietitian jobs, Rikita Samaddar, who told the Times of India that the difference between "fit and flab" could come down reading labels right.

She also warned against judging the nutritional benefit of a product on its serving size, rather than the full product size. Samaddar called this a "common" mistake, as many people read the information pertaining to one serving, rather than the whole pack.

The dietitian revealed: "This is where reading a good label smartly is applied. A lot [of] people are deceived by this and it is a common problem."

She added: "For any person who is aiming to lose weight, the best sequence is to follow a diet high on protein, then carbohydrates and then fat."

Furthermore, fellow medical specialist, Geetu Amarnani, argued that consumers couldn't blame manufacturers for mislabelling food products, or being "misleading" in their nutritional claims. He remarked: "For the marketing people, they will talk about their product in such a manner that it looks appealing to the consumers."

"The average consumer needs to be on guard against preservatives, added fat, colourings and calories in the label," he concluded in The Express Tribune.
