CMI: People in roles such as nurse manager jobs need to be more accessible

15 April 2010 - William Hobson

Managers in all professions have been called up on to make more of an effort to engage with their employees following the results of a recent survey.

A survey from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) revealed that only one in 10 workers would describe their bosses as accessible. The results have prompted the CMI's chief executive, Ruth Spellman, to warn businesses and organisations that a "dominant" style could hinder future efforts by alienating employees.

The vast majority of the 5,000 employees surveyed by the CMI said that their bosses management style caused them daily dissatisfaction. Among the chief complaints were that they were too authoritarian, too bureaucratic or too secretive to effectively engage with their staff.

The CMI has launched an online guide for managers which aims to help people in roles such as nurse manager jobs to be more accessible to their workforce. It offers information about what methods can retain the authority of a senior role without endangering the relationship between management and the workforce.

"It is an embarrassment for the UK that over half of companies' management style is seen to be negative by the people that know them best - their employees," said Ruth Spellman. "Goodwill and engagement among employees doesn't only improve people's working lives but it adds to the bottom line - in productivity, retention rates and customer loyalty."
