Charity speaks out over government dementia failings

14 January 2010

A leading charity have spoken out, saying party political manifestos must address serious failings in Dementia care. The Alzheimer's Society have claimed that less than a quarter of people with Alzheimer's and Dementia are receiving the support they really need, on top of those who already care for them.

The charity revealed shocking statistics, saying one third of people aged over 65 die suffering from the disease, and predict the number of people suffering from Dementia and Alzheimer's will increase to one million in the next 20 years. This will provoke the need of more nurses and social care staff to cope with this increase.

Chief executive of the charity, Neil Hunt said this was a very serious issue and that a large majority of people in the UK will need social care at some point in their life, he said:  "MPs have told us this is an important issue but we now need to hear guarantees on how each of the parties would provide a fair, transparent and high quality social care system."

He accepts that the Government have been putting forward talks about plans on social care, but wants more detail seeing as there is an election on the way. He wants political groups to let people know how they will develop a social care system that is fit for the future, but also how it will resolve current issues.

The Alzheimer's Society have set up a campaigners' network so that it can bring up issues like this to local MPs, and encourages people related to the disease or not to join.
