Celebrations by those working in social care as immigration cap overturned

20 December 2010 - Deborah Bates

Those working in social care jobs are celebrating, after the coalition Government's temporary immigration cap has been lifted by the High Court, Politics.co.uk reports.

Labelled as a "huge victory for the care sector" by the English Community Care Association, the decision will allow care homes and sheltered housing units to begin filling the gaps they've experienced over the pat year. A number of highly talented, experienced carers from all over the world have had their visa applications denied this year, simply due to their country of origin and this has left care homes desperate for skilled, reliable staff.

After being deemed as unlawful, the immigration cap (pushed forward by the shadow secretary for work and pensions, Theresa May) has been scrapped, meaning that some 65,000 migrant workers across the UK will have their previously removed work permits reinstated, reports Community Care.

The move has been met with praise by politicians and care professionals alike. Shadow home secretary Ed Balls is pleased with the decision, stating: "The Government's immigration policy is in a state of chaos. Their so-called cap may have sounded good before the election, but it wasn't properly thought through. It risks damaging British business."

Additionally, the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI) has said: "This shows that the home secretary cannot simply sideline parliament and the requirements it has imposed to check her powers. It also had implications for migrants in the UK who were affected by the imposition of an unlawful limit."

"This is a victory for democracy and the rule of law," concluded the JCWI's representative, Habib Rahman.
