There could be a boost in domiciliary care jobs in Britain after it was revealed that it's cheaper and more effective to care for older people at home.

According to The Guardian, the Audit Commission in 2009 stated: "Most older people live at home, not in care homes. And the longer they do, the happier they are and the less the cost to the taxpayer.''

The Guardian claimed that many thousands of people are forced into residential care away from their home, which is unnecessary and expensive, not because they need it but because the social care system isn't able to support domiciliary care.

However, the situation is improving. Research from the Care Quality Commission found that a higher number of PCTs have transformed their social care services which has resulted in more flexible and accessible access to domiciliary care for elderly people.

This will be welcome news to not only those in domiciliary care jobs but elderly people in need of care too because the cost is much more reduced if the elderly person can stay at home.

On the Isle of Wight, the use of care homes is falling. This has been boosted by the provision of personal care at home, which is funded by the local authority, allowing a growing number of older people to live at home for longer.
