Care leaders sign pledge to improve dementia care

26 October 2010 - Hannah McLaverty-Williamson

Dementia care leaders have vowed to improve care across England over the next four years.

Forty five organisations from across government, social care, the NHS and voluntary sector have produced a charter to build on the work already carried out by those in social care jobs and drive through reform.

Signatories that have signed up to the National Dementia Declaration for England include the Department of Health, Alzheimer's Society, the NHS Confederation and the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services. The organisations have vowed to work towards the meeting of seven outcomes, including designing services around the needs of people with dementia and their carers as well as improving information and advice available on the condition.

The declaration has been designed to complement the national dementia strategy which aims to promote earlier diagnosis and improved public awareness about dementia. The signatories have also promised to report their progress against the aims of the declaration publicly. They will each report their progress quarterly which will then be used to create an annual report.

Ruth Sutherland interim chief executive of the Alzheimer's Society was cited in Community Care as saying: "The Dementia Action Alliance provides an unprecedented opportunity to bring about real change for people with dementia. Putting dementia on the map in such a way will not only transform lives but also has the potential to save millions of pounds."
