The Government's proposed Personal Care at Home Bill may cause long term resourcing problems due to the increased number of domiciliary care jobs it will create.

Speaking to Recruiter, the news magazine for the recruitment industry, executives from healthcare recruiters said that there were unlikely to be problems in the short term but that economic recovery could change this situation.

Announced in the queen's speech, the Personal Care at Home Bill will provide a £670m fund to ensure free personal care at home for nearly 280,000 elderly and disabled people within the UK. It will also provide extra support for a further 130,000 people who require home care for other medical conditions.

These roles require well trained staff to provide appropriate domiciliary care for the different requirements of people requiring care at home.

Recruiters are concerned that finding suitable candidates for the hundreds of extra social care jobs demanded by the bill will prove a struggle in the long term.

One issue is that in the UK, there is no register for domiciliary care workers. This will make health authorities largely dependant on recruitment agencies where direct advertising proves ineffectual.

Some members of the recruitment industry believe that training and resourcing viable candidates will become an issue however.
