Cancer guide aimed at nurses and patients unveiled

18 August 2011 - Paul Smithson

A new guide to breast and gynaecological cancer has been compiled by two Southampton nurses, who used real life accounts and scientific accuracy to make it relevant to both patients and their clinicians.

According to the Nursing Times, each chapter of Women's Cancers has been written by an expert, with topics ranging from prevention and rehabilitation to survival and treatment options.

Alison Keen, a gynaecology clinical nurse specialist, edited the book with her Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust colleague Elaine Lennan, a consultant nurse in cancer care.

Ms Keen suggested that what sets the book apart from other texts on the subject is that it can be picked up one day by a patient and another day by staff in nurse manager jobs.

She explained that the aim was to address the concerns of both parties with clinical information and personal experiences, adding: "That's what brings it alive for me - the experience of other women makes it more relevant."

A study reported on MailOnline recently encouraged women to exercise 15 minutes per day, saying could add three years to their lives and reduce their chances of getting cancer.

The research said a short burst of activity each day could cut people's risk of dying early and developing the disease by 14 per cent and ten per cent respectively.
