David Cameron will announce a host of changes to his NHS reform plans following widespread criticism of his initial plans.

Cameron had planned to introduce increased competition and let GPs have control of budgets, but their introduction was paused following complaints from many leading figures within the NHS. 

The Prime Minister is expected to announce his amendments to the reform in a press conference this afternoon, reports BBC News. His main plans for GP commissioning powers are expected to remain but are now expected to be introduced at a much slower rate.  

It is also thought that those in leading doctor positions and nurse manager jobs will now play a bigger role in deciding what changes should be made and when.

The original reform plans had caused a controversial split between the coalition government, with many Liberal Democrat backbenchers opposed to Cameron's plans. However, Cameron has assured Tory MPs that the reforms are for the good of the NHS, and are not about party politics.

One Conservative MP told The Guardian that health secretary Andrew Lansley is determined to see his key ideas put into action.

He said: "Andrew is saying stick with me because the Tory red lines have not been crossed and his main aims - to give GPs commissioning powers and to encourage greater competition - will remain."
