Bury-based brain injury therapy firm to expand

12 August 2010 - William Hobson

A small business which offers therapeutic services to those suffering from the debilitating effects of a brain injury in their own homes is set to expand.

Whilst the majority of occupational therapy jobs are found in the NHS, at care homes or at larger private healthcare firms, Carol Collin's Northern Case Management is a classic example of the opportunities for smaller providers in the sector. Featured in The Bolton News last month, her business has gone from her kitchen table to a converted garage and finally to two units in the Brenton Business Complex in Bury.

Today, Northern Case Management employs 23 staff directly and helps put 135 clients in touch with 150 support workers. All of the clients live at homes rather than in residential care and have a wide range of needs. Mrs Collins says her company cares for those who have been most damaged by brain injury - who are minimally aware and need "high quality equipment and housing to enable them to be supported safely to carry out simple tasks such as making choices", to those "at the other end...the very misunderstood, 'walking talking wounded' who lead a chaotic lifestyle."

"These people suffer from...damage to the frontal lobe of the brain, which controls your executive decisions and alters their personality and behaviour. They require a lot of structure and support in their lives."

Now, Mrs Collin's is set to expand even further and is readying to launch a recruitment drive to fill even more occupational therapy jobs, reports the Bolton News.

"We have lots of ambition to grow as big as we can," says Mrs Collins, who this month will open another business unit to expand the company's operations and increase the number of new referrals it can handle for occupational therapy.

Speaking about her work, Mrs Collins says that regardless of someone's condition with help, "people can make choices to enable them to have the best quality of life they can."
