Brits are healthier than Americans

11 March 2011 - Deborah Bates

A new study has confirmed that Brits are overall healthier as a nation than Americans, according to BBC News.

The research - which might interest professionals in dietitian jobs - showed that residents of the USA were more likely to suffer from diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease.

It is thought that the difference in health could be attributed to the UK's more effective prevention techniques - even though Americans reportedly employ more efficient technology in their healthcare processes.

Still, the researchers behind the project said in a statement that the overall reasons behind the results were unclear: "Why health status differs so dramatically in these two countries, which share much in terms of history and culture, is an unresolved puzzle."

"Given our findings of health differences between the US and England at young ages, a promising focus of future research - one that could help to elucidate the causes of poor health across the life course - is on health differences between countries at the earliest ages."

However one health professional Julien Teitler - who co-wrote the study - claimed that the differences between Brits and Americans could be linked to early or prenatal life experiences.

She told The Daily Mail that: "The causes of the US health disadvantage are likely rooted in experiences or environments, and possibly in the extent of preventative care received."

The research was collated after some 100,000 from the respective nations were studied using self-reported information, and that gained through laboratory testing and physical examinations.
