It has been announced that the bowel cancer screening programme will be given a £60 million cash injection from the coalition government.

In a bid to save an estimated 3,000 lives per year, the Department of Health (DoH) is to employ additional NHS staff from those in specialist nurse manager jobs to oncologists. Exempt from the spending cuts, the department is eager to show off its skills in improving NHS services whilst preventing over-spend, according to The Independent.

The bowel screening programme will help to elevate Britain as a leader in cancer treatment, as well as increasing survival rates. According to Top News, the procedure to be used for the screening is known as 'Flexi-Scope' and is one of the most exciting treatments to be developed.

In addition to the screening service, the DoH is set to announce an expansive £164 million programme to tackle bowel cancer, including paying for life extending drugs, which are currently not available in the UK.

Speaking to 'The Andrew Marr Show' and cited in The Independent, Prime Minister David Cameron commented on the DoH's plans, saying: ''It is very important as we take the country though difficult decisions to say there are things that are so important to families, like my family, like the thousands of families watching this programme, that [we will improve them].''
