Body fat blasted by blueberries

11 April 2011 - Deborah Bates

Scientists have discovered that blueberries can help reduce the fat cell count found in humans by some three-quarters, those in dietitian jobs may be interested to hear.

It is thought that the fruit is able to "break down" fat cells already present, and helps to mitigate the risk of any new cells forming.

According to the Daily Mail, it is the polyphenols found in the berries that undertake the work.

The research was presented at the American Society for Nutrition's Experimental Biology meeting, and was created by scientists from Texas Woman's University.

Shiwani Moghe, the author of the research, has spoken out about the results - which were discovered after tests were undertaken on mice. She spoke to the Toronto Sun about why she was inspired to undertake the tests, claiming: "I wanted to see if using blueberry polyphenols could inhibit obesity at a molecular stage."

She also added: "The promise is there fore blueberries to help reduce fat tissues from forming in the body," but said that further work still had to be done in order to understand what the right doses would be for human beings.

From the smallest dosage given to the mice, 27 per cent of fat cells were slashed; and from the highest dose, 73 per cent were blasted.

However further research is also required to ensure no adverse effects were encountered by human beings when taking in the required dosages.
