Basildon Council could regain control of social housing stock

10 January 2011 - Laura Nineham

There could soon be a boost to social housing jobs in Essex, after it was revealed that Basildon Council could regain control of its social housing stock.

According to BBC News, the council will meet next week to discuss moving social housing stock "in-house", which will be followed by a public consultation.

In an official statement, Basildon Council explained that it's been proposed that "a structure be put in place to improve and enhance the power and input for tenants that has been started under St George's Community Housing (SGCH).

It's thought that putting social housing stock back in the council's control would create a closer relationship between the council and landlords, as well as between tenants and tenant organisations. It will also stop tenants being confused about which organisation is responsible for what service.

Andrew Baggot, cabinet member for community, was quoted by BBC News as saying: "The review has highlighted a number of benefits for bringing SGCH back in-house."

"Major savings could be achieved through the administration, management and other back office functions which can then be invested into front-line housing services that will help improve the lives of our tenants, leaseholders and residents," added Mr Baggot. "A move back in-house could save up to £1m a year in the future, which is a major amount, particularly in the current climate."
