Alzheimer's patients receive inadequate care

25 January 2011 - Deborah Bates

Around 50,000 dementia sufferers have been moved into care homes, sometimes unnecessarily, as their Alzheimer's cannot be treated properly at home.

That's according to the Alzheimer's Society, who surveyed 2,000 carers and dementia sufferers across England, Northern Ireland and Wales. The worrying results showed that at least half of all carers receive insufficient support, rendering them unable to properly care for their loved one.

Additionally, this has left one in two carers at risk of developed stress-related illnesses, such as clinical depression.

The Daily Mail reports that the majority of respondents confirmed it was "very important" they were able to remain at home, however the previous and expected spending cuts to the NHS mean that many suffering from Alzheimer's are going without the most basic of care - such as being bathed, their clothes changed and soiled bedding changed.

"It is an absolute travesty that so many people with dementia are forced to struggle without the care and support they need," said the chief executive of the Alzheimer's Society, Jeremy Hughes.

"The consequences of this represent an unacceptable human and financial costs. Many need help with tasks such as eating meals, washing or going to the toilet. While staying at home is not right for everyone, many people want to. Only with the right support will this be possible."

It is thought more investment into home services, and giving more support to those in domiciliary care jobs would help solve the problem.

Actor Kevin Whately has spoken out as a representative for the Alzheimer's Society, after experiencing first-hand the devastating affect the disease has on a family. He told Wales Online: "It pains me to think that there are so many people out there struggling alone. This is an unacceptable situation that we can't let continue."
