£450 million hospital re-development will offer hundreds of jobs

11 December 2009

A £450 million redevelopment of a Bristol hospital will open in 2014, offering hundreds of nursing and social care jobs. Southmead Hospital is to undergo a complete refurbishment and the North Bristol NHS trust are working with other NHS organisations in the area to improve local health care.

Director of Capital Projects, David Powell says: "Our proposals for improving services and facilities in North Bristol and South Gloucestershire are part of the Bristol Health Services Plan – the most comprehensive and exciting overhaul of health services in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire."

The plan will provide significant funding into health care, providing state of the art modern facilities and services closer to people's homes for convenience.

It will also provide a new acute hospital which will provide 800 beds, which will enable clinicians with the facilities they need to execute efficient, high quality specialist care in an organised environment. By having an acute hospital, it means there will be no unnecessary duplications, so staff can make fast and effective decisions.

The hospital claims: "Our doctors, nurses and other health care professionals do an admirable job of providing good quality health care from some of the worst facilities in the whole of the NHS.  We aim to provide facilities, that enable us to provide the best quality of care and a positive experience for our patients. "

Today also announced that Carillion is the preferred bidder for the acute hospital, joint with Bank of Scotland Corporate, who will both finance the hospital. Carillion is expected to invest around £50 million into the project.
