£30m worth of new funding to keep families together

10 December 2010 - Hannah McLaverty-Williamson

Troubled families are set to receive more support worth £30m over the next four years.

In an announcement made by children's minister Sarah Teather, the 120,000 families who are to benefit from the new funding will be those with health problems- including drug addiction, child behaviour issues and families in which parents have never worked.

The money will be used to prevent relationship breakdowns, with the help of those working in family support jobs and will provide some funding for Sure Start children's centres.

As reported by Community Care, Ms Teather said: "Government interference in family life is often unwelcome and usually unnecessary. But where there are unstable, vulnerable families the government cannot step away from."

In a speech later today to charity Relate, Prime Minster David Cameron is to set outline his vision for what will be a "much more family-friendly society." It is thought Mr Cameron will explain that the strength and stability of adult relationships are key to the well being of their children and it is up to communities, businesses and the government to do more to support families.

He will say the government need to focus on helping the most troubled families using targeted interventions. "What works is focused, personalised support - someone the family trusts coming into their home to help them improve their lives step-by-step, month-by-month," Mr Cameron will say.
