£300m super hospital to create physiotherapy jobs

24 September 2010 - Hannah McLaverty-Williamson

New physiotherapy jobs may be created in Wales after it was announced plans for a super hospital are back on the cards.

Nearly 18 months ago Health Minister Edwina Hart told NHS managers to abandon plans for a £300m specialist and critical care centre to be built in South-East Wales. However, the new super centre has now been included in the health board's five year plan.

The centre which will be built in Llanfrechfa Grange in Cwmbran, will play an essential part in the future development of NHS services across Gwent but it could be as long as 10 years before the specialist hospital becomes a reality.

Aneurin Bevan Health Board, which runs services across Gwent said in its five year plan: "The longer term plans for specialist and critical care services in Aneurin Bevan Health Board are clearly articulated and the development of the specialist and critical care centre on the Llanfrechfa Grange site remains the way forward for the health board community."

As reported by Wales Online only the sickest and most seriously ill patients would be treated at Llanfrechfa Grange, at present specialist health services are provided at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport.

David Kenny a spokesman for Aneurin Bevan Community Health Council said: "We need to make progress on the critical care centre. The public was supportive of the Clinical Futures model when they were consulted on it a number of years ago. Parts of that model are now coming  to fruition. We now need progress on the critical care centre."
