24/7 community nursing given thumbs-up by report

04 July 2011 - Ashley Curtis

A new report has claimed that community nurses should be available everywhere to help support patients who are coming towards the end of their life.

Nursing Times cited the Palliative Care Funding Review, an independent review commissioned by health secretary Andrew Lansley, which proposes introducing "a specific pot of money to pay for the needs of all patients nearing end of life to allow more to die at home than hospital."

The review also stated 92,000 people die in their homes without receiving proper care.

This number would be reduced if the pot proposal from the review came into play, allowing more people to remain at home. More nurses would be assigned to people who need it most by those in nurse manager jobs, giving a marked rise in the quality of care.

Community services have been urged to be "built up" to provide 24/7 access for all to community nursing care. In 2010, 24-hour nursing care was only fully available in 56 per cent of primary care trusts.

Professor Sir Alan Craft, advisor to the review, told Mail Online the government should act soon.

He said: "The government must act on the recommendations contained in the review because evidence shows that incentivising the provision of palliative care leads to better outcomes for patients, supports choice and is the most cost effective way of using NHS resources."
