132 new social housing jobs in Wales

20 January 2010

Over one hundred new supported housing and domiciliary care jobs are to be created in Wales thanks to government funding.

Grp Gwalia, the Welsh social housing and care provider has announced that over the next 12 months it will be creating 132 new social care jobs across Wales, including several trade traineeships.

Wales Online reports that the company will create 90 new posts at social care projects throughout the country. 20 new posts for trade traineeships will be created in the Llanelli and Swansea area, including two full-time roles. These roles will not be social care jobs but rather in catering, cleaning and administration. They are to be based at Llys Glas in Swansea, where Grp Gwallia has refurbished and redeveloped a former police station into a modern care home.

The new jobs are a result of two separate funding streams recently secured by Grp Gwalia.

The trade traineeships in Llanelli is a result of the Welsh Assembly Government Deprived Area Funding, worth £187,518. This money is focused on providing school leavers with opportunities to train for NVQ's and City & Guild qualifications across a range of manual trades. Grp Gwalia's jobs in the rest of Wales stem from the company's approved access to the Future Jobs Funds, which aims to provide jobs for under-25's who have been unemployed for an extended amount of time.

"Both funding streams aim to increase skills and employment prospects" said Michael Williams, the group chief executive. "Targeting specific areas and sectors where employment is needed in Wales"
